Can dogs eat ham?

Schinken auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

A small piece occasionally, and no more. Ham is not toxic to dogs, but it contains a lot of salt and fat.

Why ham gets a yellow rating

In its food overview, the American Kennel Club says ham is fine as long as it is just a small piece and does not become a habit. Its dedicated ham article advises against it. The reason is the same in both cases: lots of sodium, including from curing agents such as nitrite, and plenty of fat. According to the ASPCA, too much salt can cause excessive thirst, increased urination, vomiting, diarrhoea, trembling and seizures. The Pet Poison Helpline says fatty table scraps such as ham, bacon or meat juices can trigger pancreatitis. Miniature Schnauzers are particularly susceptible.

What to watch out for

  • No table scraps: According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, table scraps are a common trigger for pancreatitis.
  • Festive meals: At a celebration, it is easy for more than one small piece to reach your dog.
  • Dispose of the bones: Ham bones belong in the bin, not in your dog.
  • Choose lean and fresh instead: A piece of unseasoned, cooked meat is a better reward.

What if your dog eats a lot of ham?

If your dog has got hold of a whole packet or a roast, call your vet. Offer fresh water. The Pet Poison Helpline explains that vomiting after a fatty meal often starts only 1 to 4 days later, along with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, poor appetite and lethargy. Watch your dog closely during this time.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
