Greenland Dog (Grønlandshund)

Grönlandhund als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: terrakottafarbenes Wohnzimmer

For more than 800 years, these dogs have pulled Greenland’s Inuit sleds; the Inuit call them Qimmit (Feuerborn et al. 2025). Roots reach further back: modern Greenland Dog DNA strongly resembles that of a roughly 9.500-year-old Siberian dog found beside early sled technology remains (Sinding et al. 2020).

Two migrations with the Inuit

The standard counts this among the oldest breeds and calls it the Inuit’s sole sled dog since earliest times, using the older term Eskimos. Selection favoured power, robustness, toughness and endurance. A study of 92 ancient and modern genomes found two dog migration waves with Inuit from Canada, little European ancestry and little recent inbreeding despite low diversity (Feuerborn et al. 2025). Climate change, urban migration and snowmobiles are sharply reducing Greenland’s numbers. FCI recognition dates from 1967, the current standard from 2022.

Friendly to everyone, no guard dog

Energy, mental strength and boldness are the standard’s chief qualities. The dog greets people, including strangers, kindly. As a sled dog, it is not tied to one person and is therefore unsuitable for guarding, the standard expressly states. It equally openly names a strong hunting instinct for seal and polar bear. In Central Europe, that redirects towards cats, wildlife and sheep, rarely allowing off-lead freedom.

Pulling needs training and a way of life

The standard calls this a passionate, tireless sled dog, suited to people enjoying outdoor life and hiking while the dog pulls or carries equipment. Sled, cart or bicycle pulling sports, canicross and pack-carrying hikes provide appropriate work. In warmth, train early in the morning.

A coat for Arctic winters

Dense undercoat sheds in large amounts, calling for daily brushing with an undercoat comb then, weekly otherwise. Clipping does not protect from heat.

What research knows

No lifespan figure exists; McMillan et al.’s British analysis does not list the Greenland Dog. Studies mostly involve working Greenland dogs. QimmeqHealth established breed-specific thyroid reference values from 144 healthy dogs among 265 examined; T4 and free T4 were lower than in other breeds (Gjaldbæk et al. 2021). Tell your vet so a normal value is not mistaken for hypothyroidism. Ask for the parents’ hip and eye results.

A good fit if

You are sporty, outdoors often and enjoy a pack, want pulling sports and seek a friendly, independent working dog.

Not for you if

You seek a guard dog, city-flat companion or off-lead dog around wildlife and livestock.

Related Nordic pulling breeds include the Canadian Eskimo Dog (Qimmiq), the Alaskan Malamute and the Siberian Husky. To see whether a sled dog suits you, try the breed quiz or “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). The free Puppy Starter Pack helps you start. For the wall, choose dog portraits from your own photo, for example as a magazine cover on canvas.
