Can dogs eat raspberries?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat raspberries in small amounts. The American Kennel Club (AKC) considers raspberries safe in moderation. Raspberries have no entry of their own in the ASPCA plant database.

What raspberries contain

Raspberries are low in sugar and calories and provide fibre, vitamin C and manganese. The AKC highlights one unusual feature: raspberries naturally contain xylitol, more than most other fruits, but still very little in absolute terms. According to the AKC, the amount is well below levels harmful to dogs. The berries themselves are therefore non-toxic; just avoid overdoing it.

What to keep in mind

  • Fresh or frozen: Serve plain and unsweetened. Frozen berries also make a cool summer reward.
  • Avoid sweet products: Raspberry yogurt, jam, cake and sugar-free desserts are off limits. They may contain added xylitol, which the ASPCA says can cause dangerously low blood sugar and liver damage.
  • A handful rather than a bowl: Too many berries at once can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation.
  • Introduce slowly: Puppies can try them too, but only a few berries and under supervision.

What if your dog has raided the bush?

If your dog has helped themselves generously in the garden, expect a rumbling stomach or soft stools. Keep an eye on your dog, leave fresh water available and make the next meal a little smaller. Call your vet if your dog vomits repeatedly or seems lethargic. Check the ingredients of any sweetened raspberry product: if it contains xylitol, it is an emergency.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
