Can dogs eat cauliflower?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat cauliflower. Plain and cut into small pieces, it makes a low-calorie snack. Larger amounts cause wind.

Why cauliflower is fine

Like broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and kale, cauliflower belongs to the species Brassica oleracea. The American Kennel Club describes it as a vegetable dogs tolerate well in small amounts, with plenty of antioxidants, fibre and vitamins. An AKC article on obesity includes it in a list of recommended fresh vegetables. Cauliflower has no entry in the ASPCA’s plant database. A floret instead of a treat can be a good idea, especially for dogs that need to lose weight.

How to serve cauliflower

  • Cut it small: Bite-sized pieces help prevent your dog from choking.
  • Cook it first: According to the AKC, steamed or boiled brassicas are less likely to upset the stomach than raw ones.
  • Keep it plain: Butter and rich sauces can irritate the pancreas, while onions and garlic are toxic.
  • Dogs prone to wind: Cabbage-family vegetables produce a lot of gas. If your dog’s breed is prone to gastric torsion, speak to your vet first.

What if your dog eats too much cauliflower?

You will usually notice it in the air: wind is the most common result. Soft stools or a rumbling stomach can occur too. Provide water and make the next meal smaller. If the abdomen becomes hard and swollen, your dog retches without bringing anything up or becomes restless, go to the vet immediately. This could be gastric torsion. For persistent diarrhoea, call your vet.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
