Can dogs eat asparagus?

Spargel auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, your dog can eat the spears, preferably cooked. According to the American Kennel Club, asparagus is not toxic to dogs. The plant’s bushy foliage, however, is.

Why asparagus gets a yellow rating

The spear is not a problem, but the surrounding plant is. The AKC warns about the green asparagus foliage that grows from the spears in the garden: it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and severe abdominal pain. In its plant database, the ASPCA only lists ornamental asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) as toxic; its berries in particular cause digestive upset. It does not list edible asparagus at all. Because the sources do not entirely agree and only part of the plant is safe, asparagus gets a yellow rating.

How to serve asparagus

  • Cook it: Steamed or boiled asparagus is soft. Raw, it is tough, and a dog may gulp it down whole.
  • No fat: No butter, oil or hollandaise. According to the AKC, butter and cooking oil can harm dogs.
  • Cut it into small pieces: Raw spears should only be offered in small pieces.
  • Secure the garden: If you grow asparagus, keep your dog away from the foliage, preferably with a fence.
  • Do not be alarmed: Their urine may smell strong afterwards. Many people recognise this from their own experience.

What if your dog has eaten asparagus foliage?

A few pieces of cooked asparagus will cause no more than wind. If your dog has eaten asparagus foliage or the red berries, watch them closely. If they vomit, have diarrhoea or show abdominal pain, call your vet and explain which part of the plant they ate.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
