Leaving Your Dog Alone: How He Learns It Without Drama (Step by Step)

Dog waiting calmly next to the front door

You walk to the door, and he already knows. The keys jingle, he gets up, his body stiffens, he whines. You say "See you soon", close the door, and in the stairwell you hear the first howl. If you know this, you also know the guilty conscience. And the neighbours. Staying alone is not a given for a dog, he is a pack animal who loses his group when you leave. But he can learn it. Almost every dog can. It just takes longer than most people think.

Why staying alone is hard

A dog has no concept of "I'll be back in two hours". All he has is: my human is gone, I cannot follow. For a puppy who has just left the litter, that is an existential alarm signal. For an adult dog from a shelter, often an old wound. Both need the same thing: the experience that leaving always ends with coming back, and so often that it becomes boring.

The plan that works

Week 1: The flat becomes a safe place

Before you close the door, he has to learn to be in the flat without you while you are there. Sounds paradoxical, is the key. You go into the bathroom and close the door. You go into the kitchen, he stays in the living room. You sit on the sofa, he lies three metres away on his blanket. Every time he stays calm, nothing special happens, that is the point. No praise, no drama. Calm becomes normal.

Week 2: The door

Now you really go out, 30 seconds, then back in. No goodbye, no greeting. Ten times a day. Then one minute, then three, then five. The rule: you come back before he gets restless. If he barks or is frantic when you return, you were gone too long. Then go one step back.

Weeks 3 to 6: The duration

Ten minutes, twenty, thirty, an hour. Not longer every day, but in waves: sometimes longer, sometimes short again, so he does not learn that it gets worse every time. A chew bone or a filled Kong when you leave helps, because chewing calms. And you only leave him alone after a walk, tired and emptied.

From week 6: Everyday life

Two, three, four hours. Most adult dogs can stay four to five hours well once they have learned it.

The often-quoted eight-hour limit deserves an honest classification: there is no legal upper limit for leaving a dog alone in Germany. The Tierschutz-Hundeverordnung (German Animal Welfare Dog Ordinance) stipulates in § 2 that the owner must give the dog "several times a day the opportunity for contact with the caregiver", for puppies up to the 20th week of life at least four hours a day. It does not name a number of hours for being alone. That eight hours in a row is too much for the vast majority of dogs is therefore a rule of thumb from practice, not a legal norm and not a study figure. Anyone who has to cover these times needs a dog-walking service, a dog day care, neighbours or home office days.

The mistakes almost everyone makes

  • The big goodbye. "Mummy will be back, be good, I love you." With that you tell him: something bad is about to happen. Leave as if you were taking out the rubbish.
  • The big greeting. When you come back and he freaks out and you freak out too, you confirm that the separation was dramatic. Come in, take your jacket off, only then greet him calmly.
  • Too long too fast. From five minutes to three hours because it went well once. That costs two weeks of training.
  • Punishment for the chaos. When you come home and the sofa is in pieces: he was in a panic, not plotting revenge. Punishment strengthens the fear of your return.
  • All day without a break. A dog who was out for five minutes in the morning cannot wait eight hours. That is not a training question.

What helps, what does not

Helps: Tiring him out before you go (brain work more than running), a fixed resting place, a crate if he loves it as a den and not as a prison, chews, a radio at room volume, blinds half down against stimuli from outside. Helps not at all or little: Pheromone plugs alone, sedatives without training, a second dog as the solution (then two howl), a camera you speak into (that drives him mad).

When you need help

If your dog hurts himself when alone, scratches doors until they bleed, gets diarrhoea or cannot stay five minutes after two months of training, it is no longer a training question but real separation anxiety. Then a dog trainer with a behaviour focus or a vet for behavioural medicine will help. Sometimes medication is part of it while the training runs. That is not a weakness, but a tool.

An honest word at the end

Some dogs learn it in three weeks, some need half a year. And some remain dogs for life who would rather come along everywhere than wait at home on the sofa. That is also a result, not a failure. A dog is a family member, not a device you switch off. But most manage everyday life if you give them the time to learn it.

The dog who comes along everywhere is also the one whose place is most noticeably empty. As a framed canvas he hangs exactly where he always lies anyway.

If you want to build staying alone from the start instead of repairing it later: in Welpenerziehung & Junghundtraining (Puppy Training & Young Dog Training) you will find the build-up from the first week, together with everything else that comes up in this period.
